How to Crochet!

A Half Double Crochet Dish Cloth

By Elizabeth Krajewski

What is needed for this project:

  • A crochet hook (Each skein of yarn usually has the required hook needed).

  • The yarn you want to work with.

  • Scissors or something to cut with.

Abbreviation:

  • CH - chain

  • HDC - half double crochet

  • SC - single crochet

This pattern is very easy for the beginning hooker!

  1. The First thing to do is to make a slip knot. Put your crochet hook into the knot and CH in multiples of five plus one. Examples would be 26 or 31 (the plus one doesn’t count after this point). Once you have this done, you can start your first row! Congratulations!

  2. Turn your chain around and yarn over so that there are two strands of yarn on your hook. Skip the first chain and insert the hook into the second chain. Yarn over again, and pull the hook back through the chain. At this point, there should be three strands of yarn on your hook. Yarn over again so that there are four strands. Pull the last strand through the first three strands, and you will have your first HDC. Continue to make HDC to the end of the chain to complete your first row.

  3. Once you have reached the end of your first row, make sure you have the same number of stitches that you chained (not including the plus one, so 25 or 30). CH1 and turn your work around.

  4. Skip the first stitch and make an HDC in the second stitch. Make an HDC in every stitch until you reach the end of the row. CH1 and turn your work.

  5. Repeat step four until you are satisfied with the length of your dishcloth. Take your scissors and cut your yarn. Pull the yarn through your last stitch and pull tight. Weave the loose ends into your dishcloth, and then you are done!
